Display Energy Certificates (DEC)
What is a Display Energy Certificate (DEC) ?
- A DEC grades the energy efficiency of a building for everyone to see
- DEC’s are a Mandatory requirement since October 2008
- All Public buildings over 1,000square meters must have a DEC
- Some buildings that must have a DEC includes: Hospitals, care homes (in local authority control) Libraries, museums, art galleries, courts, schools, colleges universities, public golf courses ( in local authority control) etc
- A DEC is based on your buildings energy consumption
- DEC’s must be displayed for the general public to see at all times
- DEC’s must be renewed annually
- An Advisory report for energy improvement is issued with a DEC.
- You can be fined £500 for each complaint of non display of a DEC certificates and £1,000 for failure to possess an advisory report
The process
- Survey by Emtac CIBSE Accredited Low Carbon Consultants
- Collation of annual energy meter readings – incomplete data will result in a “G” rating
- DEC information is entered into government approved software
- DEC’s are submitted to the government register
- A DEC certificate is issued to you and remains valid for 1 year
- A DEC Advisory Report is issued to you and is valid for 7 years
